Exhibition poster for” Birds Beasts and Flowers” at Waterperry Gallery

Our exhibition continues at the Art in Action Gallery at Waterperry House. This weekend to coincide with Celebrating Ceramics, we will be demonstrating by the gallery. Come along and say hello. Celebrating Ceramics is a Craft in Focus/ Waterperry collaboration and there are some amazing ceramic artists taking part as well as demonstrations and talks.

On Friday July 19th, we will be demonstrating our handbuilding method. Everything starts with a wheelthrown enclosed shape and the animal evolves from that. Each piece is completely unique and mainly Raku fired.

Saturday July 20th we are planning to demonstrate the technique of Obvara. (weather permitting)It is a firing process similar to Raku. The results are unpredictable and fun.

Art in Action Gallery, Waterperry

We have been lucky enough that the Art in Action Gallery at Waterperry is exhibiting our work, alongside that of Anja Percival, during the next month. The exhibition includes Raku , Steampunk pieces, figurative female sculptures, tiles, poppies and bowls. The theme is Birds, Beasts and Flowers. We delivered today and look forward to seeing how the exhibition comes together as Liz Tagert works her magic. The show coincides with Handmade Oxford June 27-30th and Celebrating Ceramics July 19-21st. We will be there one or both weekends and hope to be demonstrating. Come and say hello.

China to China

So, back towards the end of last year some of my little porcelain bowls were taken to China.

little bowls

In return, I was delighted to receive these beautiful  bowls and 3 small packets of clay. one of porcelain, one of yellow and one of red clay. I have only opened the porcelain, which was a grey colour and hard to believe it would fire to white.

Chinese bowls

It was only 500g of clay and was very smooth to throw and did turn white on firing. The result was these small bowls  – which are going back to China next week. Who knows…….. ??

It is always fun to be asked to do something different.

Waterside Tile picture

I did a Summer project with a group of people with a range of disabilities. We made a tile picture to represent where they live and their interests and creativity. I am always impressed by the imagination and thought they put in to their work.

The challenge for me was to fix everything to a backing, grout it and frame it.

New work

I guess everyone who makes things is looking for new ideas.   We certainly are always trying to push forwards with what we make. This is partly to keep the brains and creative impulse challenged, but, admittedly, partly due to both having a low boredom threshhold.

Sometimes it is something completely different. Often, it is using something that we do already, and taking off in a slightly new direction with it.

Richard has a serious ebay and car boot sale habit – which brings up interesting objects that need to be incorporated somehow………………….

After a clear out of the attic, I had a few interesting objects, too.
