Hard fern vase

At the end of last summer, we had a lovely few days staying with friends in Dornoch, NE Scotland.

On a walk in nearby Balblair Woods, I spotted some Blechnum “hard ferns” and collected a couple of leaves. I often use ferns and tree leaves to impress clay. I had in my head an idea to create a landscape on a pot reflecting the shapes, textures and colours of tall pines with the heather underneath.

The hard fern made a wonderful impression on the clay. I’ll have to go back for more!
